• "Mercifully, Jack's tenure in Seattle was extremely short-lived. Fifteen games into the season, he was traded to the Yankees for fellow hurler Fred Talbot. Aker feels the move prolonged his career by several seasons.

  'I had struggled my last couple of seasons with the A's and then again with the Pilots. If Ralph Houk had not saved me, I think my career would have ended there,' Aker said. 'I pitched for maybe 10 or 11 managers at the major league level, and Ralph was unquestionably the best. Not even close.
