July 4, 1951: Charlie hits the first and only home run of his career in the first game of doubleheader off the Washington Senators' Fred Sanford. The solo shot lead off the bottom of the Yankee 6th and pulled the Yankees to within one, at 4-3. Later in the inning a Hank Bauer single would score Phil Rizzuto to tie the game. The Yankees took a 5-4 lead into the ninth when Vic Raschi and Joe Ostrowski were beaten up for an uncharacteristic Senator five-run ninth, including a three-run home run off Gil Coan which was followed immediately by a solo shot by future Yankee Irv Noren.

I was a catcher also so I really listened to him. I remember I was thrilled when on July 4 he hit his only career home run off ex-teammate Fred Sanford after Sanford got traded to the Senators."
