Facts, Trivia, Memories and More about Cliff Johnson

Highlights

June 30, 1977: Cliff hits three home runs, including two in the 8th inning, to help down the Toronto Blue Jays 11-5 at Exhibition Stadium.  The first homer came leading off the fourth against Toronto starter Jerry Garvin to extend the Yankee lead to 2-0.  It would be 2-1 in the eighth when Cliff led off again, smacking his second home run off Garvin on the day.  Two batters later, Lou Piniella followed with a solo shot, followed by a Graig Nettles single that would chase Garvin.  Jerry Johnson relieved for Toronto and got Bucky Dent to fly out to center.  A Willie Randolph single was backed by a Mickey Rivers RBI single, then a Thurman Munson three-run homer to blow the game open.  They weren't done.  Chris Chambliss doubled and Cliff knocked out his third homer on the afternoon to stretch the lead to 10-1.  Both Johnson and Munson knocked in four runs to back Catfish Hunter's 4th victory on the season (4-3) improving the Yankees to 42-33, a half game behind the first place Red Sox.
